Cleaning & Hygiene
Brushes, safe disinfectants and scrapers. The least glamorous kit in the shop, and quietly the most important.
New cleaning & hygiene lines are landing soon - here are our current bestsellers in the meantime.

About our cleaning & hygiene
Feeder cleaning kit will never be the exciting purchase, so here is the plain case for it: a dirty feeder can spread disease between the very birds you are trying to help, and greenfinches in particular have suffered badly from infections passed at unwashed feeders. The routine that prevents it is short. Every fortnight - weekly for busy feeders - take the feeder apart, scrub it with a bird-safe disinfectant, rinse thoroughly and dry before refilling; rotate feeding spots now and then so droppings never build up below; and give bird baths a weekly wipe and fresh water. This collection makes the routine painless: long-reach bottle brushes that actually fit seed tubes, port brushes for the fiddly corners, bird-safe disinfectants that rinse away clean, scrapers for tables and trays, and gloves to keep it civilised. Ten minutes a fortnight keeps your patch a genuine sanctuary rather than an accidental hazard - the kindest kit you will buy. Free UK delivery over £20.
Cleaning & Hygiene - FAQs
How often should feeders be cleaned?
A full clean every two weeks, weekly at busy feeders, plus clearing old damp food at each refill. Baths want fresh water every day or two and a weekly wipe.
What should I clean feeders with?
A bird-safe disinfectant or a mild solution, a proper brush, then a thorough rinse and full dry before refilling. Avoid strong household chemicals, which can linger on surfaces birds touch.
Why does feeder hygiene matter so much?
Feeders concentrate many birds on one surface, so infections pass easily at dirty ones - greenfinch numbers were hit hard by exactly this. Regular cleaning is the single kindest habit in bird feeding.
