The First Feeder Kit
The three things that matter most, in the order they matter. A feeder birds can cling to, a pole so you can put it in the right place, and a tray so the lawn survives and the robins get a look in.
Add sunflower hearts from any supplier — we do not stock food yet, and we would rather say so.
Far more gardens feed birds than water them. A shallow dish at ground level plus a solar fountain that keeps the surface moving — no wiring, and it draws species a feeder never will.
Site it in the open with cover two to three metres away, never directly under a feeder.
Fat is what carries a small bird through a fourteen-hour night. A steel cage feeder that keeps starlings off, a tall pole to site it clear of the fence, and a tray to catch what falls.
Always cut the plastic net off fat balls before they go in the cage.
