Fat Balls
Suet balls packed with seed. Dense, ready-made energy for the months when the garden needs it most.

About our fat balls
Fat balls are winter arithmetic made edible. On a frosty night a small bird can burn through a tenth of its body weight simply keeping warm, and it must win those reserves back the next day or not see another night - suet pressed with seed and cereal is the fastest, densest way to help. Long-tailed tits arrive at a fat ball feeder as a travelling family and strip it together; blue tits, great tits, robins, house sparrows and starlings all take their share. Every fat ball we sell is net-free, because the plastic mesh some fat balls still come wrapped in can trap small feet and should never hang in a garden - use a proper rack or caged feeder instead. Feed them from autumn through early spring at full tilt, and more sparingly in summer. Store the tub cool and dry, and in a real cold snap, keep the rack full: that is when it counts. Fat Balls - FAQs
Why are net-free fat balls important?
The plastic nets some fat balls hang in can trap and injure birds' feet and tongues. Loose, net-free balls in a purpose-made rack feeder give all the benefit with none of the risk.
When do birds need fat balls most?
Autumn to early spring, and above all during cold snaps - frozen nights are when suet's dense energy genuinely decides survival. A full rack through a freeze does more good than at any other time.
Can fat balls be fed in summer?
Sparingly, and in shade - suet softens in heat and can foul feathers. Reduce quantities in warm months and shift the emphasis to sunflower hearts and mealworms instead.
