In Belfast, start with sunflower hearts in a hanging tube and a low tray for robins and blackbirds. Position matters more than the mix: two to three metres from a hedge, at head height, refilled on the same schedule every morning. Add shallow water year round and clean the feeders fortnightly.

Do not let old food sit. Wet seed cakes into the base of a tube and goes mouldy long before it looks obviously wrong, and fat products soften and go rancid in warm weather. Fill feeders no more than a few days at a time in summer, which keeps everything fresh and makes the cleaning routine easier to stick to.

A caged feeder is the reliable answer: small birds pass through the mesh and squirrels cannot. A pole with a baffle also works, as long as the pole stands well clear of fences, walls and overhanging branches, because a squirrel will happily jump a couple of metres to reach it.
It makes more difference than most people expect. Birds need water for drinking and for keeping their feathers in condition, and in frost or drought a reliable supply can matter more than the food. Shallow is essential, no more than two or three centimetres at the edge, with something rough to grip.
Usually a few days, sometimes two or three weeks. Birds are cautious about a new object and will watch it before they use it, so the commonest mistake is moving or removing a feeder that was about to work. Leave it in one place, keep it full, and give it a fortnight before you change anything.
